Years ago, the state of Michigan instituted the Michigan Graduated Drivers
License Law. Simply put, this means every teenager from the age of 14
years, 9 months to the age of 18 must take a series of classes and road
training in order to get their Learners Permit. This is divided into two
sections called Segment 1 and Segment 2.
Segment 1
Segment 1 consists of 24 hours of classroom training and 6 hours of
driving. This is where teenagers begin their drivers education. We start a
new Segment 1 class every month, usually on the first Monday of the month.
Classes are held Monday through Thursday, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm for
three weeks. Some time near the beginning of class, often on the first night,
the student will schedule driving appointments to complete the required
driving time. Once finished with Segment 1, we will provide the student with a
certificate that he/she can take to the Secretary of State office and get a
Level One Learners Permit.
Segment 2
Every student must drive on his/her Level One Learners Permit for a
minimum of 90 days, and during that time accumulate 30 hours of driving
time (including 2 hours of night driving). After that, he/she can take
Segment 2, consisting of just 6 hours of classroom training. Segment 2
builds on what the student learned in Segment 1, with the benefit of
read-world driving time. We hold new classes for Segment 2 near the end of
each month.
