| Is your child ready for drivers
education? A difficult question. Michigan's Graduated Drivers
License Law allows teenagers that are 14 years 8 months old to start
drivers education. But it is really up to you! Drivers education is
not like it was when you took it. Now, the parent has control over
when their child moves through the different parts of drivers ed.
There is a
guide to help you with how drivers education works now. However,
it deals with the law. You must decide when your child is
ready. Beginning drivers education has less to do with age than it
does with your determination of their ability to handle the
responsibility of driving.
Ideally, a student takes Segment 1,
gets his/her Level 1 Learners Permit and drives with a parent for at
least 90 days and accumulates at least 30 hours of driving time with
a parent. Then they take Segment 2. After that, the student
continues to drive with their parent until they have held their
Level 1 permit for 180 days and have accumulated 50 hours of driving
time.
This means that not only do you get to
participate in your child's drivers education, you control how
he/she progresses through the process.
