WANT TO BE A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR?

Many people want to become a driving instructor. It is usually because they feel that they have experience in driving or that they have a background in training inexperienced drivers, Just having that is not enough. Depending on which area you want to teach, the state of Michigan requires that any instructor has specialized training in their area of expertise and passes a certification process. Regardless of your experience or training, this process is mandatory.

The first part of the process is to check to see if you pass the requirements for certification. The State of Michigan has strict guidelines for instructors when it comes to their driving record and criminal background.

You will be required to get fingerprinted. Even if you have done this before for something else (such as getting a hazardous materials endorsement or for the Department of Education), you will need to get it done again for this. Instructions for getting this done is on the fingerprint request or we can schedule an appointment for you. The cost for this is around $70.

You will need to get or renew a physical. A DOT (Department of Transportation) physical is acceptable, but any physical done cannot be any more than 90 days old. It must be on an acceptable form. This form must accompany your application for certification. The cost for this varies depending on where it is done, but the cost is usually $50. The State of Michigan does not require a drug screen, but Tri Area Driving School reserves the right to require one at any time, either before hiring or during the course of your employment as a driving instructor.

Once you have completed these steps, then submit your application to the State of Michigan. Include an application fee of $45 and your physical form. If you intend to teach drivers education, include transcripts of your prepatory course. Remember to do this after you have let your background check be sent. If accepted, a Driving Instructor Certificate will be mailed to your home and then you will be authorized to instruct. Please expect up to 2 months for approval.

If you are interested in being an instructor for Tri Area Driving School, please submit your resume and a copy of your instructor certification.
